97 A4 Quattro Transmission Slips HELP!
If it slips or won't go into gear when its cold, but runs fine after about 2 or 3 miutes then your probably just low on fluid. Other than thay you have some kind of communications issue between the PCM and TCU and between the airbag module and the TCM, may be a loose connector somewhere, maybe the TCU is failing.
The automatic transmissions seem to be very sensitive to low fluid level in the transmission. My sons was probably between a quart and a pint low and it would not go into gear until you either raised the engine speed or the fluid warmed up a little bit. On really cold days that would take about 3 or 4 minutes of running the engine. After it was warmed up it operated just like it was supposed to. I could be your problem, but with the communications issues your having between modules there might be some other problem.

Well I put the car up on a lift today and noticed a large leak between the trans and the engine. It's transmission fluid so I'm assuming I have a sipping problem due to low fluid. I still need to check the fluid level but at this point I can see the trans needs to come out. Does anyone know if the trans pump is on the front of the trans or if there is just an input shaft seal?
I always reply to the original posters problem. I will usually ignore posters who try to add their problem to someone elses posts, they really need to start their own post as everyones issue is unique. You confused the issue here because I thought the OP had communication issues with the TCM but his was just slipping and it was you who had the no 4th gear and a comm problem between modules, as i don't always read the names of the people making the posts. Your solution is not going to be the same as his and no one gets the help they need when there are multiple posters with different problems in the same thread. If everyone keeps their questions/problems in separate threads everyone gets helped alot quicker without everyone going off in different directions by getting symptoms from 2 or 3 cars.
