Default 98 A4 Quattro ignition module

Just joined the site although you guys have helped me out already lots of times as a guest. My A4 has burnt through 3 ignition modules. The first time it happened I had been running with the fog lights on constantly as my dims suck and that helped. I read on a forum that that can cause the ignition module to burn out. We replaced it, it worked until I used the fog lights again 2 weeks ago for about 20 miles. Got a warranty replacement part for free from Autozone, now it won't start again. I think it is possible that my dog could have turned the lights on while I was in a store the other night, flashers were blinking when I came out. Any one have any suggestions for a permanent fix? I am not opposed to just disconnecting the fog lights or pulling out the bulbs, although I do like them.

There's another alternative... delete the ICM and convert to new-style 2.0T coil packs. It can be a little expensive and/or time consuming, but in the end is worth it. No more ICM!

I think I have misspoken. The guy at Autozone today said that it is called ignition switch-the electronic part, not the key part.

Ah that makes more sense, I was wondering what impact lights could have on the vehicle's ignition system.

Yes ignition switch is the correct term.

Try a Genuine Audi one, many aftermarket units are known to be crappy.

Okay, we put a new one in yesterday, and this morning it is already screwed up. It started, but the lights don't work. Brights will come on if you hold the arm in, like if you are flashing them. This is what it did the first time that part went bad, back in November. I think Autozone is not going to want to give me a new one on that lifetime warranty plan every time I drive my car. Something has to be shorting out, but how to find it?
