If you can't wrench the car don't do it. If you want a car to learn on, then I would say go for it. I bet most of the really active wrenches on here would do it and either dd it or flip it for triple.

^^^ to add to what Jeff says regarding learning on it: you could do that but only if a) you have another means of transportation, b) you've got a stash of money you can use specifically for buying parts, c) you have a good tool collection (to which I'd add Vagcom - you'll find it's indispensable), and d) you have no defined timeframe for when it needs to be on the road. This is gonna be a fairly involved project. With luck, you'll have a junkyard nearby where you can pull parts for the car.

As a side project for grins, backup car, or winter car, I'd be all over this thing as a lazy-Sunday kind of project, but not as a DD that I'd need to rely on to get to work. Too much potential for tons of work needing to be done.

This is the same guy you bought your audi from? how do you know? and where do you, or he live? i dont think its the same guy.

But yeah, im going to take a look at it still but the more i think about it it kinda seems like a bad idea and potential for a lot of lost money...
on the other hand it could be a really performance oriented car, i know 2.8s arent a powerhouse but i could make an extremely well handling car that is lots of fun for a decent price.
or just fix the fender, rattle-can if matte black and go for a hella flush lookr cheap.. lotsa options w such a low price, feel me?

OP I hear you on where you're going, but I'd urge you to shop around. You came up with a total around $4000, but you should be able to find a B5 for right around that price that doesn't have to have all that work done. It kind of comes down to the choice of spending the money at once or over time - same end result...

I'm still debating selling mine for about 4K, all major maintenance done.

Funny thing is, I haven't actually put it on the market yet. Not sure if emotionally, I can.

But the point is, for 4K, like Devil said, you can get one in good condition with the required maintenance done.

Damn, she looks like she was a beauty in her earlier years...she was neglected and abused..that son of a bitch!

Anywho...I guess a lot of the fellas have said it to the bone..it comes down to money and know how..if you can wrench, buy the parts used and get down and dirty.

I agree with the fellas that you can buy one for 3-5k depending on mileage, for the cost it would take to bring her up to perfect working order and looks.
