'98 Front Speaker Install
Anyone ever install after-market 4" speakers in the front doors? Some sort of "mounting brackets" need to be used to get the new speakers to fit on the panels since the sizing is different. (Audi speakers have 3 holes VS 4 on after-market speakers) I'm putting in a pair of Infinit Kappa 42.5i's to match the 62.5i's I put in the rear deck and a basslink in the trunk. Running an Alpine F240 amp to the rears and will now complete my system (at least until I upgrade the Head Unit) with the Kappa's in the front. Any ideas on what I should use to fit the speakers to the door panels? Spoke to Crutchfield and they recommended plastic or cardboard even...Would that mean I just drill through it and glue/drill into the panel? Need some advice from someone who has done this before...

I'm surprised that is what crutchfield told you. Obviously cardboard wont hold for more that 2 seconds. Many of the speakers they sell come with adapters and mounting brackets. See if you can find one.
I haven't changed my speakers, so I can't speak from experience.

I was looking to do the same but when i put in the new head unit they sounded suprisingly well. Heres an idea you can drill the four new holes and add nut serts. That will give you enough thread to screw them in just check for clearance. By the way do the back grills comeoff of the speakers so I can replace thenm or do I have to remove the whole deck.

You have to remove the entire rear deck to replace speakers (at least on the B5). There is a post in audiworld formums on how to do this.
Besically remove the rear seat bottom. pull down and remove the lateral bolsters, flip the seatbacks forward, pry the plastic covers off the three steel child carseat clips, undo the 3 reatining bolts. disconnect the wires from the 3rd brake light.
Do not remove the seatbelts. Gently break the glue holding the shelf and foam to the crossmember, and gently pull and wiggle the shelf forward and over the seatbelts.
You can then access the rear speakers.

I was able to break off the plastic mounting pieces from the factory speaker and crazy-glue it onto the Infinity Kappa 42.5i's. Not the most kosher way of doing it, but it worked well and didn't require drilling any new holes. Crazy glue is an amazing thing. The full system sounds great except that I'm getting a bit of static, I think because my driver's side speaker wires are running next to the power cable where it runs in through the firewall. Next step, in the future will be to upgrade the head unit. I think I'm gonna have that one proffessionally done...
If anyone wants help installing a full system with amps into a non-bose B5, I'd be happy to give any pointers now that my system is comnplete. It's a pain in the *** and took me a total of around 8 hours, but I probably saved myself around $500 in installation costs since the audi's are so tricky and need customization.
