no, don't run it dry. i usually put about 13.4 gallons in, this is when the gas light is on.
if you run it dry, it could suck up all the sediment from the bottom of the tank, and can clog fuel lines, filter, etc.
my gas guage sometimes reads falsely as well

It's a 16 gallon tank. Light is designed to come on with 2 gallons remaining. If your gauge is screwy, search "fuel sending unit" to find the reconditioning DIY, and While you have it out, use electrical contact cleaner to clean the resistive element. That should take care of any inaccuracies.
