Default A4 B5 Immobilizer problem

Dear Gents (and Ladies)
I'm new to the site, so apologies if this has be covered previously.
However, I’m stuck and would be grateful if anyone out there can help.

The story: Someone tried to steal my Audi A4 B5 (EU based, ADR, 1.8, petrol), but didn’t succeed. I decided that it was going to relatively straight forward to replace the ignition barrel which no longer accepts my key. Further investigation showed that they had broken off the pick up coil on the ignition barrel.

I have managed to get the car moving again by: replacing the whole ignition barrel, which operates with a new key (with all the electronics removed). I have wired in an additional pick up coil (placed under the dash) with the RFID capsule from the original key placed within the coil.

I have a third party OBD cable and VCDS-Lite. From this I am satisfied that the immobilizer unit is recognizing the RFID capsule (I no longer get fault code 01176 07-00 Sig too low).

If the battery is disconnected then when I connect it no fault codes show and the car will start immediately, and continue to run (immobilizer light goes out, and stays out).

However, switch off the engine the car will not restart (runs for a couple of seconds then cuts out - immobilizer light flashes), and fault code 01177 65-10 appears (also 17978 Engine blocked by immobilizer P1570 35-00).
If I reset fault codes - the car will still not start and fault codes return.

The only way to get the car to start again is to disconnect and reconnect the battery (somewhat inconvenient).

Does anyone have any pointers for me before I fit a switch in the cabin and a big relay by the battery.
Thanks
Roger
