Default ABS ECU woes - any thoughts?

Hi there,

Have had a search around, but not found the answer to this one.

A while back my 1996 A4 2.6 V6 Auto started flashing up warning lights for the ABS and ASR, combined with audible warnings. On the same journey it then fired low oil pressure warnings and put the gearbox in failsafe mode.

I had a guy come out and check the electrics - mistake - as he had me send off the instrument cluster. Clusterepairs.co.uk told me this was fine and suggested I send in the notorious ABS ECU in instead. Well, that was a big job in my book, with the wheel off and meeting torx tools for the first time, but I managed it and sent this off to be repaired.

It came back and I refitted it. Only to find the same warning lights - now clusterepairs.co.uk insist the unit is fine and they have an extremely low failure rate. So I bought a £75 code reader (ouch) thinking that something might just now need resetting. This speaks to the rest of the car fine - I reset the service reminder for instance, but when I try and get it to speak to the ABS module I get a 'link error' which is what is says when it can't see something like parking sensors (which this car doesn't have).

She's only got 115K on her and it seems a shame to have her sent for breaking, but I'm reaching my wits end! If anyone has any suggestions I'd be mighty grateful.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts...
