Default ABS module questions.

Good morning.
I've a '98 A4.
The ABS warning light is on and the Emergency Brake light is flashing.

I've searched this forum and found that the ABS Module is on it's "last legs" or is no longer functioning.
I see that the ABS Module can be rebuilt.

Now, I'm no mechanic... but I do perform easy tasks on my vehicles.

My questions: Where is the ABS Module? Is it easily accessible? Can an amateur remove it and have it rebuilt by someone?
Any comments and/or recommendations will be appreciated.

Graci.

Removal Procedure
Your ABS module is located under the hood and fairly easy to remove- lucky you!

Tools Required

• Wheel lug wrench
• Car jack
• 10mm socket wrench
• T20 Torx driver
1) Loosen the lug nuts of the driver's front wheel.

2) Jack up the car and remove the driver's front wheel.

3) Remove the wheel well liner.

4) Remove the windshield washer fluid reservoir.

5) Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the module.

Note: If the main connector has 15 pins or less, and there are two wires connecting the module to the pump which cannot be unplugged (hard wired), you have an ESP module which cannot be repaired. For an image of an ESP module click here. Do not remove your module if it matches the above description.
6) If both electrical connectors can be unplugged, remove the six T-20 Torx screws holding the module to the hydraulic unit.

7) Remove the module.

8) Cover the exposed surface of the hydraulic unit with aluminum foil.

I had the same problem with my abs unit on my 98 a4 and I used http://www.autoecu.com/ to rebuild my abs unit. It cost 65(service) +15(shipping)=$80
It took about two weeks to send and receive my unit as im located across the country from ATE but you can send express shipping. I believe they are good service as I no problems for about 2+ months now and it better that buying a new abs unit from the dealer which is bout 1000$+

I recently had the same problem. I went with cheapabs.com to get my module repaired. Cost was 99 plus shipping. Total was 120 with shipping. Turn around was fast about three days. Customer service was good too. Soon as I got my abs unit back and bolted it to the car, abs light went away. Been three problem free weeks now.

+1 for CheapABS.com. One day turnaround, did $5 priority shipping there and back (you can enclose your own return shipping label if you want), so one week total for me. Car drove just fine in the meantime, other than the annoying warnings on the display (abs, washer fluid low).

Oh, and if you think you have dropped the grommet for the washer pumps on the floor somewhere, and can't seem to find them after looking around for almost an hour, shake the reservoir, they might have been pushed in on re-installation.

Another success here for CheapABS.com

My old ABS module was unrepairable (internal memory error). I had a spare ABS module that needed rebuilding, but was the wrong model for my car. Matt @ Cheap ABS allowed me to swap the wrong module for the proper rebuilt module, and I've been fault-less ever since
