Exclamation control module questions.... Please help

hello I'm pretty new to the forums... Still getting use to it. So I hope this is in the right place.

alright here is my issue. I drive an 88 audi 90 sedan second model (later).
I was driving to work the other day and the car started lurching and backfiring. It came to a halt then started after trying for a bit. Still sounding like crap I drove another mile or 2 before giving up all together. I had run out of gas a couple days before so I figured the fuel filter was plugged so I replaced it. Still nothing. Car was turning over but I heard no fire. So I checked and had no spark. So I replaced the rotor and cap on distributor. Still nothing. I had the coil tested and that is good. Now I can't find the dang control module. Now I'm not sure if the ignition is all electric or transistorised. Is there a way to tell? I'm on the edge of losing my job because I have no car.
I guess I need to know if my car even has a ignition control unit. If it does where in gods green earth is this thing at? Please any help would be amazing. Next step is replacing the distributor. I also replaced the silinoid

I found out how to tell the difference between the two ignition systems. Transisterized system has a vacuum line on the distributor. Is there a way to buy just the module for the distributor. For 88 audi 90 sedan 2.3L.
