ac and engine temp running weird
my 2001 1.8 ac doesnt blow cold air when im not moving, like at a stop light or just turning on the car. when i turn my car on the air will b hot and the rpms start to bounce up and down... but, the rpms only bounce like this wen the air is on... if the ac is off the rpms are normal... it takes about 5-10 minutes of straight driving for the cold air to start to kick in... once its working it blows very cold air.. but if i stop at a stop light the rpms start to bounce up and down and the ac will blow warm air and sometimes stop blowing any air for about 5 seconds and then start blowing warm again.. i noticed while i was driving and hitting every stop light that my engine temp gauge was goin from the middle, which it normally were its at, to all the way to the left very rapidly, stay there for 30 seconds then go back to normal.. this seems to happen as the ac is acting weird..
any advice would be appreciated.. thx

cool.. is this something that i can do on my own or do i need to take it in and have changed... i dont know where that is on the car or anything. and for the secondary fan is it as easy as turn the ac on and listen for another fan to kick in.. lol i dont know where that is either.. thx..
theres the main fan that you can see is connected to the center of the engine. then there is another fan on the passengers side of the radiator that is run by an electric motor. you should be able to easily hear it kick in and you can see it moving if its on.
the coolant temp sensor can be replaced in under 5 minutes with a flat head screwdriver, just disconnect the sensor wire, pull out the clip thats holding it in, swap in the new one and put the clip and wires back on. its located at the very back of the engine, sort of down behind it, in the center. its between the engine and the firewall.

If the engine temp switch doesn't do the trick, the problem with mine not blowing cold air even with the AUTO button pushed and the temp at LO was the outside tempature sensor.
In your dash if the outside air isn't that hot then it won't run the AC. mine went bad and i had no AC because it thought it was 14degrees outside.
