Default Advice: oil guage heating up after coolant flush

This is my first post, but I need a little advice. I have a 2001 A4 Avant 1.8t. I just had the coolant flushed after the coolant light came on and I noticed that it was a little low on coolant. It had been around 40k miles so I figured I was overdue anyhow. I drove it for about two days and everything seemed fine, but driving home today in bumper to bumper traffic on a 91degree day I noticed that the oil temp gauge was creeping up. It had always kept at around 170 degrees but today it crept all the way up to around 220 degrees. I am guessing that something is going on with the thermostat. I am not sure if 170 is normal or if the thermostat was stuck open or if now a bunch of gunk was knocked loose and it is clogged or stuck closed. The coolant gauge is still reading smack dab in the middle as it always has. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.
