hey guys i got an 98' a4 1.8t and im getting this awful whining sound from the engine. I can hear it most when driving hard, it starts around 2500rpm stops around 5000rpm when accelerating, first i thought turbo but i can still hear it (but not as loud) when the car is slowing down both when in gear and when in neutral. I can even hear it when reving the engine at a stand still. Anyone know where the sound can be coming from ? any help will be great

Gonna have to be more specific than that man. Does the whining change in pitch or volume with RPM? Do you have a vague idea of the general area of the engine bay where the noise is coming from? Any chance you could get a vid?

i went to an audi mechanic, noise is coming from the wastegate, something about the wastegate actuator loose and caussing it to have a nasty rattling whine during boost and after more money down the drain and a further dely getting it chiipped and exhaust

 

Are you mechanically inclined? A new wastegate is like 30 bucks and taking the turbo off isn't THAT bad if you are somewhat familiar around a tool box.

 

i wish i was, wud save me alot of money in the future
