Default Any suggestions? :D

Hi
So yeah I'm new here but I thought I'd throw this out there anyway considering I'm just looking at my first car... but I also just wanted to get your opinion on this particular Audi and what could possibly go/be wrong with it and also what to look for. You know, tell me whether I should probably stay away from this, or go ahead and buy it... I know the 2.8's are quite a bit more reliable though so that's a good thing http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=443...&ad=673357

p.s. wtf's wrong with the apostrophe when I type this? I'm. gah that's annoying

looks to be in good condition for a 12v but I got mine for a lot less then that a little over two years ago now and it had 175K on the clock, so I'd say offer him around 4K and see what happens. 12v's are good commuter cars but if you want to mod it at all, get at least the 30v.

Basically you are getting my twin except that one has the sport steering wheel (which I want bad) and an aftermarket deck.

Overall the 12v is a kick a$$ starter Audi but you will quickly lust after the Audi's with more modability

as for the apostrophe thing, it's an issue with the forum they haven't fixed yet, we got hit hard with some bugs a bit ago and they are still trying to fix everything.

nice! that's good to know, I haven't even owned a car before anyway, but he says room for negotiation so I'll see what I can do. Oh, by the way, have you really had any problems with yours? seems to have just a few more miles than this one ha, that's actually kind of funny, my site seems to have the same problem, only it puts / instead of ' :B

well I didn't have any problems up till about 196K but now I got a few things on my plate, some my fault some not

1) I'm in need of a new Timing Belt (300 parts, and about 700 total if you use a shop) at fault, millage of car and Audi for using an interference engine
2) I need a new Power steering rack (about 1200 out the door if you use the dealer but I'm getting the rack for 300 and then 500 for labor so I can get it done for 700) at fault - who knows
3) Oil Pan (f***in rock put a hole in it last week ~600 total from an independant shop) at fault - the F'in rock on a camp road (I'll never go down that road in anything with less then 6-10in ground clearance again)
4) EGR valve clogged -doesn't need to be replaced but if you like not having a CEL on constantly then it's a little job) at fault - millage
5) Cats are shot (I'm to lazy to replace them right now and it's fun to tell people I own a diesel) at fault - millage
6) thermostat is going bad (will replace when I do TB because it's behind the TB) at fault - millage

So all in all I'm looking at a decent amount of work but because I'm gonna DIY most of it it won't be to bad. Also I'm trying to get Council to pay for my oil pan because it is there fault for neglecting this road to the point it is at.

It's just what you inherit with an older car. And Audi's are not cheap to repair, if you are paying for it yourself then I would suggest you have a good job or find another car. For example, if you get the Audi OEM cats, they are approx $700 parts, when you could also get two universal cats for about $70 each or straight pipe it for even cheaper.

so it comes down to whose check book repairs come from. For me, my parents have graciously said they will cover regular maintenance (which all this is under in my book) So my parents are covering the repairs which makes my life easier.

hope this helps. They are great cars to have, but if something breaks it's gonna cost a decent amount to get it fixed.

But it's totally worth it when your friends ask you how you afforded a new Audi and you tell them it's 12 yrs old

edit:_____________

here is what Edmunds says you should pay if you lived in the 513 and if the car was quattro-http://www.edmunds.com/used/1996/aud...tion=vdpresult
here is edmunds for that one since I read the description actually - http://www.edmunds.com/used/1996/aud...tion=vdpresult

according to edmunds you should offer him around 3K, edmunds is usually a little under KBB, so if you tell him 3500 that should be about right. But Also I'd look for one with quattro, assuming that you live around SLC it means you have the winters I lust after, so AWD, would be a huge bonus to you

well, that's good, doesn't seem to be many major problems then. haha i was just looking through your gallery, you're right, it is almost your twin. It's even the same color. luckily for me, my parents will pay for the first tune up and any repairs, so I hope they catch everything the first time

ok, thanks for that I figure I'll probably go ahead and try for 4K, since that flip out dvd player thing is probably around 500 and I don't know how much those headlights are but still, yeah, thanks... I know a lot more now
