Post Anyone ever rebuilt a Turbo?

I have the opportunity to purchase a used K03s(058 145 703 J). The deal is that they don't have any info on how many miles were on the unit. They say they are selling it as a "rebuildable core" so I would need to rebuild it (if someone could point me towards a rebuild kit) or have it rebuilt(where is a good/inexpensive place). They also say that it spins freely and don't have any shaft play so maybe I wouldn't have to rebuild it.

How much would this turbo be worth? Is it worth my time to deal with having it rebuilt?

I see that Gpop wants $350 to do a rebuild or $99 for a kit to do it myself. Anyone know of other options. Is this something that a fairly mechanically inclined individual could do? It appears like this process would be time consuming so I'm hoping that most of the $250 labor charge is time and not special tools.

Any help would be great.

I havent seen a rebuild kit for less than what gpopshop has it for. I'm pretty sure you don't need a press to do it. probably just a hammer and punches, circlip tools or soemthing similar. But if there is no shaft play and it spins freely, and shows no sign of coolant/oil contamination, I'd say just throw it in.

I currently have a Rebuilt K04-15 turbo which I had rebuilt to higher than K04-23 turbo which will be fitted on the 8th Sept.

The guy at scroll products said that you would need a shop due to something needing to be balanced

You need to have the shaft balanced. You have the wheels spining 10's or thousands a time/min, not good to have it not balanced and send a wheel into the housing.

You can send them your turbo and they will do all the work for you but then I would go for the upgrade if I was you.
