Default Audi A4 1.8T '96 startup problems.

Hi guys, I'm new here and just registered to see if I can get something out of the VCDS faults I got on my car. The car starts when I turn the ignition but shuts down around 1-2 seconds after it starts, just dies. I pulled out some fault codes, but I can't really make any sense of it. I thought it had something to do with the immobilizer, but there aren't any fault codes on it. So I don't really know what the problem might be, but I really want my car back on the road.

Posting the fault codes:

Does your car start up at all after the initial shut downs? Or is this a repetitive thing where it starts and shuts down in 1-2 seconds and this just keeps repeating. (start/shutdown, start/shutdown etc)

Starts and dies, over and over, until the battery is empty

That's interesting, reason I ask is I had a similar problem but mine would shut off the first few start ups and then fire up fine for the rest of the day. My issue was the piping in the diverter valve had a hole and im assuming as it was off through the night air starts creeping into the intake via the hole hence causing problems on first few startups until it clears it all out.

I would suggest checking the immobilizer again, just cause there are no codes shown for it does not mean there isn't a fault in the system. Also check the terminals to the battery and the grounds for the engine.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. You've got a lean-code, so I'd check that you have fuel pressure. You can arrange a "T" fitting into the pressure line leaving the top of the fuel tank, and then see what reading you get when attempting a start.

After a bit of fault searching and checking the relay etc, I found the pump to be faulty and well, not pumping anything at all. So I need a new fuel pump.

Thanks for all the help

And you're sure the battery isn't just dead? If there's no power to anything, they'll all fail to work.

I'm sure the battery isn't dead as the car tries to turn on, and all the electronics works when the ignition is on. But I measured with a multimeter through the pump itself, and the pump is dead. Also tried turning it on with the fuel line stuck into a bottle, and well. No fuel came out when I tried starting it. So yeah, pretty sure that the pump is at fault there. Also checked the relay with a 12V car battery of another car, and there is no problem with the relay.

Did get help with the fault-searching from my dad who has been a mechanic aboard everything from his scooter when he was a teenager all the way to huge drill-rigs. Also of note, he's the technical leader on a rig as we speak. So chief of everything from electronics to the engines. I think I can trust his word on the pump problem

Yeah, I see that you're a bit of a joker right now, but the fact that the car tries to start and the voltmeter in the dash says it's about 12 volts tells me that it ain't the battery. Also the fact that I tried with a jumpstart a couple of times still to no avail. So I should just look into getting myself a new pump and the problem will probably be solved.

Even though I kind of don't want it to be solved as I get to drive my dads Coupe GT in the meantime, god that engine sounds so good, even though it's eating up my finances with it's premium fuel need
