Default auto box stuck in limp home mode

Hi

I live in Newtongrange near edinburgh and travelled a long way (liverpool) to see a 1999 a4 avant 1.9tdi se auto, it was love at first sight and after a quick test drive round the block all seemed well however after going on the motorway the revs just seemed to climb and climb without ever shifting up (4 speed auto) after getting home and checking the manual it would seem that the auto box is in limp home mode, when in d it is sluggish to pull away (was like this on the test drive) but if i select 1 it pulls away fine, this would seem to fit my theory, has anyone else had this problem and what are the normal causes for the autop box to go into limp home mode, also would the fault show up on a diagnostic code reader or is there a seperate AT ecu that would need checked???

Many Thanks,
Mark Inglis

Might help not sure

Fixing limp mode low power in a VW Jetta Golf TDI or wagon - feels like lost the turbo boost

Basically you will need to scan for codes and see what the issue is with the car.

hi, the engine itself is fine, idles ca 750 rpm, pulls great at 3rd gear speeds, its the box thats not shifting, i searched the threads and aparantly it could be the neutral safety switch (my reverse light on the shifter isnt on and this matches up with the symptoms) where abouts is said switch?
