I don't know that there is one out there. It's a big job. I've done it, but I followed Bentley. I'd advise you to invest in a Bentley for that job.

I have the bentley service manual. They refer to audi tools to do the job, I was hoping that the special tools are not needed. They also say that you need to support the engine from the top, is this needed. They say that you need to remove the front end of the car and ac condensor to remove the starter, is this true.

Were you able to remove the trans with a floor jack? Looks like the transmission is alot heavier then other transmissions I have removed.

i got the trans out with a floor jack.
You shouldn't need any special audi tools
the starter doesn't have to be removed from the car, just take the bolts out that go through it.
The engine doesn't really have to be supported, but it is a good idea, it wil be held by the engine mounts but the rear of it is supported by the trans. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Mine was the 2.8, and you have to remove the alt to get to the starter. I used no special tools. You do need to support the motor. I used this special tool for that:

Did you get the torque converter bolts without pulling the starter all the way out?

Yea I think I'd run a good chance of screwing up the pump seal if I tried to take the trans off the torque converter while it's still attached to the motor.

I see what you mean. I would take the starter out and unbolt it all then. Starter is a bitch to get at.
