What motor do you have? If it's the 2.8 you need to put the front in service position. It's only a 15 minute job. But on the 2.8 you have to remove the alt, then the starter. And it's hard enough with the front moved out.

The motor is a 1.8l.. What does put the "front in service position" mean.

Does the exhaust need to be dropped from the turbo back?

If you're going to do this, you need a Bentley. "Service postion" is when you pull the front forward about 6 inches. B5's are made to do this without disconnecting coolant hoses and AC lines.

Transmission out of car. I found that I had to separate the cat from the downpipe to remove the cat, just not enough room to get The cat and downpipe out together.

Would you rebuild a damaged auto transmission or buy a used low mileage trasmission on eBay?

All I know is....I had a shop rebuild mine. Put it back in. It lasted 1 month. Shop rebuilt again. Lasted 2 days. Shop rebuilt again, this time it lasted but it always made noise. It was never right.
