Sounds like your central locking pump. We have vacuum-operated locks, the vacuum for which is supplied by a pump in the trunk. It's on the passenger's side behind the carpet. The impeller on said pump is made of graphite and tends to shatter when it gets old. They're quite expensive to buy new but if you google "central locking pump fix" you should be able to find plenty of threads on fixing it. You might also try keeping an eye on the classifieds for a part out or rummaging through a junk yard for one. Any B5 A4 or Passat pump can be made to work with a bit of light modification.

^^ This. I had the same problem last spring and replacing the central locking pump fixed it.

Could be a vac leak someplace between the pump and the doors. There's vac hoses leading up from the pump forward, check those next.

Obviously they're different if the numbers/letters are different. What car is it from?

Like CCA4 said, when buying a replacement - look for one either from a B5 Audi A4 or S4 or a B5 Volkswagen Passat. They should all have the same/similar central locking pump.
