AWD Engine In 2001 B5 A4?

AWD Engine In 2001 B5 A4?
While roaming my local auto junkyard for parts, I found a 2001 A4 B5 with an "AWD" 1.8t engine. Back home, I searched and the AWD was used in various Volkswagen models.
I have 2 theories on this:
1) Someone did an engine swap for the standard AWM engine.
2) The car was imported from a country where Audi sold A4's with an AWD engine.
Can anyone shed light on this?
