Are these the same projector housings that came with all B5's starting with the 1999.5 upgrade? My car(1999.5) has the new projector housings, so I'm wondering if the only difference between my car and the 2001.5 with HID's....are the bulbs and ballasts?

My projector housings came with H7 halogen bulbs.
The headlamp housings themselves might be the same, but I can guarantee the projectors are not. Factory xenon headlights use D2S bulbs, and the use of pretty much any other HID bulb is illegal. Granted with most projectors (halogen or xenon) there will be a distinct enough cutoff that the use of xenon bulbs will not cause glare above the cutoff. While it's still illegal, in many cases it is acceptable.

I have been wanting to get HID's into my car, but I don't want to have these kind of technical glitches, nor do I want to be illegal if I can do it in a legal manner.

Thanks for any answers.
"By the book" would require more than just the factory xenon housings/bulbs/ballasts, it would also require the levelers and control module, and associated wiring.
