Default Cam Tensioner

Hi, I have a 1997 B5 12V (AFC) 2.8 model. I was told there was a Cam Tensioner seal that needed replacing as it was leaking (a mechanic told me upon giving a quote for a TB replacement). I was considering doing this and much more work on the car myself so I was reviewing the DIY section. I am new to this and from what I can see there is no Cam Tensioner seal on this model- I saw it on the 30v (AHA) model. The only cam seals I see are front and back (4). Is this correct.

Thank you

Your mechanic probably thinks you have a 30v. There is no cam chain tensioner on a 12v because it is a single cam engine, hence nothing to tension and no tensioner to seal.

No, it's a single can engine. There is a cam seal behind each sprocket on the front of the engine. Honestly, unless they're leaking visibly, leave them alone. The potential to damage something and create an irreparable oil leak is considerable.

Sorry for the late response Thanks so much for answering. I will check them out and if they look like they are not leaking at all I will leave them alone. I presume the crankshaft seal would be the same protocol.

Are there two 1/2 moon plugs (seals) on the back side of each cam that can be changed. There seems to be oil leaking from the back side and I was told they were cam seals.

Thanks again

I don't think there are two separate half moon seals but I'm not positive. There may be a similar shaped "dip" in the valve cover gasket though as there is on the 30v. It's very possible that the VC gasket is what's leaking.
