Default which cluster do i need?

I just got a 97 a4 1.8t auto. It was cheap and is only temporary after totaling my car. The lcd in the center of the speedo cluster is gone. Not sure why. Can i just replace the display or should i just replace the entire cluster? And either way How do I know which display or cluster to get?

There is tons of threads about this very thing, take the time to google. But anyways as far as I know, you cannot buy the LCD separately. You can replace the whole cluster but this is a very common problem and it will be hard to find one without that problem, as when you replace the cluster the mileage of the car that the cluster came off of shows up, Not yours.

You can buy LCD screens separately, I have two. However they're a pain in the *** to swap and if you aren't extremely comfortable with soldering and electronics, I wouldn't even attempt it. There's a guy on the 'zine who will swap them for you if you have the time to mail it to him.

No point in another cluster, it'll be just as bad or worse. I've yet to see a B5 with an original, still working LCD.

Gone completely, that's a new one. Replacing it should still be the same procedure, just won't have to deal with taking out the old one. Unless somebody really screwed things up inside the cluster taking out the old one. Do all of your gauges and idiot lights still work?

If it's missing I'm guessing someone tried to take it out and damaged it beyond repair, so I would go with a different cluster. It's actually possible to change the mileage with just a regular blue vagcom cable and the right software.
