Default Clutch not engaging

This is my first post here, but not my first visit. I have used the information here to repair my 99' A4 Quattro on many occasions. Now I have run into the first serious issue and I'm unsure how to proceed.

I have a 1999 A4 Quattro with the 1.8T engine. All stock parts except for what I have replaced, which is mostly suspension. My most recent replacement was 2 new half-axles due to clicking CV joints and ripped boots. Not extremely difficult.

When I purchased the car, the clutch seemed to catch a little high and I asked the garage I bought it from if it needed replaced and if they would do it. They said it was fine. That was over 2yrs ago. Nothing has changed with where it catches or the performance of shifting and accelerating.

Last evening as I was pulling away from a stoplight, I accelerated through 1st gear and as I was about to shift into 2nd, I heard a -snap- sound and lost the ability to move forward. Momentum carried me to the side of the road. I checked to see if I had clutch ability. The pedal felt the same as it usually does, but I could not get the vehicle into gear or move forward. The gear selector moved freely and I tried every gear.

I had to toed home and weather has been terrible so I haven't had a chance to check it out underneath to make an assessment.

There aren't any out of the ordinary sounds when the vehicle is running, no loose items rattling around. My initial guess is a clutch problem, but I am unsure if that is it. I believed that I would have had difficulty moving the shift selector if there was a clutch issue.

I know it is a fairly vague question, but does anyone have any ideas where I should look first? I'm fairly competent with repairs and have a good working knowledge of my vehicle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

how long ago did you do the halfshafts? It sounds like one of them wasnt torqued in properly and has popped out.... This would cause all the power to go to that shaft and spin freely. Get under there and check it out... Good luck

That's exactly what it was. Bent the hell out of 3 bolts, and has made me decide to get a torque wrench ASAP. Thanks for the tips, friends!

don't torque the bolts down in a circle. do a star pattern and triple check the torque
