clutch slipping 5-speed.
ok so i finally fixed all the problems w/ my car as far as boost goes and now im hitting a solid 20 psi and holding at about 15 psi. i have the stock clutch in the car now and it has 80k on it. i saw the clutch about 5k miles ago when puttin the new engine in and noticed it had some heat spots.
the clutch is holding fine in first and second, but is slipping bad when im in 3rd or 4th and hit full boost. which ive heard are the first gears to start going w/ a bad clutch.
basically what im asking is, with my car setup how it is now, w/ 20psi and the internal work i have done, will another stock clutch hold, or would it have the same results i have now? id say my car might (thats a big might) be close to the 250hp mark that the other thread said is what they hold up to.
im really just trying to make it until next spring when i have the money for a B.T. and a stage 4 clutch. would it be worth doing a new clutch but puttin in an OE one for now? or should i just tune the car to about 12psi until i can go B.T.
sorry for the long thread.

If you're looking at a BT setup in the spring, and the reason you're waiting until then is because of funding, then turn the boost down to 12psi like you said, and ride out the winter. It's pointless to spend the money and time/labor installing a new OEM clutch that you're going to deep-six once the snow melts. Turn back the boost, drive slower, and save your money for the BT setup and Stage 4 clutch.
theres nothing wrong with running a stage 4 clutch now on a stock turbo. sure its overkill but it will get you used to the pedal feel and its one thing you wont have to do later. it will also be broken in by the time you get your turbo in there so you can turn the key and go play, no waiting 500 miles for it to break in.
buying a new OEM clutch now, installing it, then buying an aftermarket clutch later and then installing it would be a waste IMO. if you are changing your clutch your better off upgrading now. if you want to wait till the spring, turn down the boost.

one thing you could do is a get a use stock clutch for cheap, swap it in. then when spring hits, you'll need to pull the engine anyways so you'll have access to the tranny. only thing is, you'll be spending extra money for the used clutch but if you ride on a slipping clutch too long, you'll end up messing up the FW but then again you won't want the stock FW with the bt anyways but you can sell it if you save it.
yeah i was thinking about it. i guess i just didnt realize i can put a better clutch in now and it wont hurt. the main reason i wanted to wait is cause i cant decide how much power i want out of the car in the end.
That doesn't make sense. How can the clutch hold at 1st and 2nd but not in 3rd or 4th? If the clutch slips, it would slip easier in lower gears (1st) than higher gears (5th). You probably just didn't notice it slipping in 1st and 2nd.
Yeah there is no such thing as too much clutch, just too light clutch. If your looking for a Southbend clutch check out our site.
