Considering purchase of busted 2000 A4 B5
I'm the current owner of a 99 Audi A4 B5 2.8 Quattro - The car has been fantastic for me and I love it however it has 245k miles and the owner previous beat it up so it's starting to show alot of wear despite my maintenance efforts.
I have the opportunity to buy a 2000 A4 B5 2.8 Quattro Nearby. It's identical aside from some revised items and the interior color. It has 150k, new tires, apparently has had timing belt and many other items redone or well maintained. (awaiting maintenance records).
The possible deal breaker - It was advertised as having a bad Automatic Tranny. When I arrived he actually didn't know what the issue was. It died on the highway and was towed.
The symptoms he described was loud exhaust for a month prior - then suddenly on the highway smoke, loss of power, and stiffening power steering. He states that the engine was dripping oil the whole way home and his guess was the transmission.
When I looked at it the top of the engine is very clean. Underneath the exhaust is disconnected and hanging and you can see oil having dripped above the shield back to where the exhaust exits. I threw a vagcom on it and it found nothing other than xenon lights but didn't try to start it in case it was more serious.
I know that when my exhaust came disconnected I suffered power loss and alot of weird shaking as well. Could this be as simple as an exhaust problem? Would it account for the oil?
I guess I'm looking for my best case / worst case scenario and then I plan to go back and take a deeper look. I'm not a "car" guy but I have swapped an engine before and did replace all the upper seals on my current A4.
Thanks in advance for the advice - Let me know if you need any other details.

I would normally agree, however I'm at the stage where the 99 needs to go. it would take more than it's worth to keep it drivable much longer. If I don't go this direction I'll be looking for a different vehicle - just looking for educated insight to figure out if it's worth pursuing.
