Coolant temp sensor-a4 2.8Q 99

Can a faulty coolant temp sensor make the car idle higher than normal even though the car is fully warmed up?

yes it can if has failed it may have gone to say -50 so the car think's its freezing and puts the idle high/ more fuel as it is trying to warm the engine up
