Default Coolant Temp Sensor/Location?

Hi, does anyone have a picture of where to locate the coolant temp sensor?

And the replacement sensor has to be the green one? A temp sensor from like Murrays won't work?

Thanks in advance.

i forget the color stuff, i think its different between the years. call the dealership and confirm which one you need.

as for location, its in the coolant flange at the back of the block.

If you order from ECS Tuning or PureMS, give them your VIN number and they'll send you the right one.

Would I need to do this is my temp gauge takes for ever to get to the middle if the gauge? seems that it takes like 15-20 mins to get close to normal operation temp.

I'm only doing this because it's giving me a VAG code saying about MAP cooling sensor.

Lefty, it could be that but it could also be a stuck thermostat. If the t-stat is stuck open it'll take a long time to get up to temperature, and at least on the 2.8, this seems to happen a decent amount. If it does on the 1.8T also, at least that one can be changed fairly easily. My understanding on the 2.8 is that the t-stat is behind the damn t-belt tensioner.

thanks Upstate. how would I know for sure. I'm assuming just change the stat? would there be a code thrown if this was the case?

Well, doing the sensor is kind of a no-brainer in that they're known to be problematic in the A4, they're only about $20, and they're easy to change. I'd do that first, and see if it helps. If not, then go for the thermostat. Chances are very high that it's one of the two.
