Coolant Temperature Warning and now not running
Hey guys,
Just wondering if i could get some help.
I have an Audi A4 B5 98 and a week ago after driving 100m up the road the Coolant Temperature warning light came on. The coolant temp gauge was maxed out so i pulled over, topped up the water and oil and let it sit. I later started it and drove it back home, coolant temp warning light came on again so i parked it in the garage. The next day i attempted to start it and it cranks but does not fire. When i turn the key to on the temperature gauge is still reading high after a week and it still will not fire. Thinking maybe Coolant Temperature sensor is causing the high reading on the gauge but would that stop the engine from firing?
Help appreciated, cheers.

Solved.. Apparently if you go on a really short drive then shut the engine down while its still cold the mixture is still rich and the engine floods easily. Cranked it for 30 seconds two times with the accelerator to the floor and it finally started. phew
I'm glad you resolved your coolant issue on your Audi. I know this thread is 4 months old now, but would like to add to it to help others out.
I had the same problem as you. My coolant temperature gauge was maxed out and the needle was on H. Even though my car cooled down over night, the temp was maxed out instantly on start.
You mentioned that your car didn't start after you cleaned your temp sensor (AKA ETC). You might want to mist your ignition coil pack in the dark to see if your coil pack is still good and not leaking any electrical sparks. If it's bad, your engine may misfire and also not start in the future.
I need to check my coolant temp sensor tomorrow and hopefully fix the problem on my Audi too.
Thanks for posting your information. It was a great help to me.
