Differences in 99 2.8L motors
Hello All
I did a bit of searching but could not find answers. I bought an 99 A4 with a 2.8l. The motor is toast, so I looking to do a swap, but I have run into a lack of information. Junkyards are telling that the manual motors are not interchangable with the the automatics.
Can anyone verify this. What are the differences between the motors, can I swap parts to make them work? The reason I ask, is the automatics are easier to find and they are cheaper, but my car is a manual.
Thanks in advance
-Jason

well make sure you get an AHA engine which is the right engine code for your year. to make an auto engine work with a manual car, you need to mod a bearing and the input shaft i believe? most people have done the 1.8t swaps so detailed info on the 2.8 is rare. have you visited car-parts.com?

I have looked on car-part.com, all they show is manual or auto, but it really doesnt say what the differences. I have done a few swaps in my day, and have seen where a few things are different from an auto to manual motors, but they can be made to work by swapping parts. I just want to gather as much info as possible before hand though.
So you are saying there is a bearing in the end of the crankshaft that is different from the auto to manual? I have run across that in some nissans I have done, they have a pilot bushing that is in the cranks that has a different I.D. for the different trans.

It is most likely the same as the 1.8t which also uses a different crank flange on the Auto and Manual. This can be seen on write ups of people that have done A4 1.8t Automatic to manual transmission swaps. When doing this they end up having to shave down the crank flange to allow a flywheel to bolt up to the flange, then they have to use a special bearing as a pilot bearing for the manaul transmission input shaft.

The car is a manual car already. I am not finding any info on these swaps. Do you have links for these.
Where is this 1.8t auto/manual page?
