I want to get a scan tool but don't want to spend a ton of money just for problems.

It most likely will. But you will only get the generic code. You can do the same thing for free at most part stores

There are manufacturer's codes. A VAG code reader retrieves
them.

I bought the $49 one from this guy to have it in my glove box, on-hand at all times. It works fine at a basic level and can even give some good data streams. It's by no means comprehensive, but it's also cheaper than one appointment at the shop to pull a code. You aren't gonna get airbag, ABS, radio, or the other body control modules info out of this basic scanner, it ain't no 1551, but for a handy universal one, it's kinda neat.

yea get a usb vag-com scanner off ebay for less then $20 and download the free version of vag com from ross tech. it requires a computer, but if you have a laptop already, your good. this way will give you the most comprehensive scanning and data logging short of buying a dongle from ross tech themselves for $250.

you won't be able to do all the things the full version can do tho, like clearing codes and changing settings...unless you know your way around computers and know keygens
