Default ebay vag cable work with other cars?

while this technically isn't a b5 a4 question, this section gets the most traffic. so here goes

my roommates monte carlo ss is running really rough and he's got a CEL, rather than risk driving it to autozone, i'd like to scan the car here. i have an ebay vag cable, which is basically just an obd II to usb cable. so i should be able to use it on other cars if i can find a program for chevy cars right? i use the vagcom software to scan my car, so using a chevy or basic software that scans all cars with the cable should work the same, right? or is the cable specifically designed to work only with vagcom?

i tried using scantool (from scantool.net) and it didn't work. i matched the ports and everything and yet it still says it can't find the interface. does anyone know of a software that will work?

I always thought it was different, but I may be wrong. Why dont you just buy a cheap scanner from autozone and use that.

there isn't a software that works with the hardware. a computer programmer could make one but it would take quite a while lol.

Do you have the full license for the Vag com software? I believe if you do, you should be able to scan other cars using the "OBD II Functions" in Vag com Main menu.

Be sure to let us know how that works out. I found a "crack" and when I checked the program it said it was fully registered, but as soon as I did any function the software would return back to the shareware version. I plan on simply buying the license since it is well worth it seeing as how other owners such as BMW don't even have an option of purchasing their own diagnostic tool/program for under $150.
