Default Engine was fine and now won't start

I am on vacation and currently stranded at the hotel. my car was fine for the 1000 mile trip from florida to kentucky. and now after we got back from dinner, it won't start. I have a DTC code scanner and it came up with P322 Ignition / Dist Engine Speed Input Circuit No Singal..... Please help i have no clue what's wrong

That's frustrating. Peace be with you!
Happily several people on this forum have had that problem and it is intermittent. Try again in 15 mins and you might be OK.

It sounds like the engine speed sensor might need to be replaced. It's about $50 - but I don't know how much work is involved in it yet. Actually - I'll have to do that repair myself in the near future.

Anyone in Pittsburgh PA interested in helping me out? I'll buy the steaks and/or beer.

By the way - you do want to fix this sooner - this same sensor can cause the engire to quit while running (or so I've read).

Good luck. I'll bet you get home fine.

Thanks.

I fittled around with the car for almost an hour and including but not limited to, unhooking the battery. turning the car on with the battery out. disconnecting EVERY wire connection to EVERY sensor possible with just a few tools and some small hands.

Got everything back in and she started right up. however i am still having some problems with the ESP light coming on and causing the engine to not start right away (takes upwards of 20 secs). not once, until now, have i ever had the Check Engine light come on and it not start period, but could the Engine speed sensor be related to the ESP system as well?

Thanks,
-Tyler

I must admit that I'm no mechanic. I just bought an Audi and now I'm checking this forum most days just to learn as much as I can. Hopefully someone with more expertise will chime in for both of our benefit.

When my car won't start (though it usually starts a few minutes later), the EPC (or whatever) light comes on. When I turn the car off and then back on then the epc light stays off. After such an episode, I always find a p0322 code even though my check engine light is not on.

Here is what ross-tech says about that error:

Possible Symptoms
Engine shuts off
Engine doesn't start
Speedometer inoperative
Glow Plug Indicator Lamp (K29) flashes
Possible Causes
Engine Speed Sensor (G28) loose
Engine Speed Sensor (G28) faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
Special Notes The Engine Speed Sensor (G28) is also used as a reference sensor for the crankshaft position

so - it sounds to me (the non-mechanic) that this is related to the engine speed sensor. But the special note about the crankshaft position is interesting. I wonder if this could be an early warning symptom of something else?

Ya i got home fine but within 2 days after the 1000 mile trip back, she didnt start again. Check the codes and it's the same for the engine speed sensor. I have a Haynes book ok the car but the car they show is a 1996 A4 and mine looks much different under the hood. Buying another engine speed sensor is easy for me to afford i just need to know where it is to replace.

Any help would be great
