Default Engine heating

I made a longish trip to Virginia from CT and the stupid GPS made me go through Bronx. Boy the traffic so F**all there that we had to stutter along for almost an hour stopping and starting every minute. By the time the hour was almost done, the engine heat light came on in the dash and only then did i realise that the temp guage had gone all the way to the right. And i did notice a slight biurning smell. Luckily for us, we soon hit I-95 and within seconds the dial went back to normal.

The same thing happened at one of the tolls at NJTP, where we had a long queue.

Aany idea why this has happened? Coolant level seems fine. I changed my engine oil just last week. So.. what could be the issue?

I jhave a 99 A4 2.6L by the way

Thanks

Default RE: Engine heating

coolant fan not cutting in it could be a fuse/relay/fan switch coolant temp sensor/ thermostat seized/ or at worst the water pump failed ( im going for a fuse )
