Default engine issues

Whats up. I have a couple questions and im hoping someone can help me out with them. I have a 2001 A4 1.8t quattro and it overheated. i was told my best bet would be to buy an engine for it. How much would it roughly cost to swap the engine? the next question is that i was offered to purchase a 2000 a4 2.8 version that had front end damage. Would it be better to take the 2.8 and forget about the 1.8t? Thanks

1.8t is better than 2.8 because you can do a lot more with it. Are you sure your engine is toast? Did the head gasket blow? Did it warp? How badly did it overheat and for how long?

i def do like the 1.8t over the 2.8. the head gasket did blow and there was a crack in between the valves. it over heated for a while i believe and it would just shoot up all the way up to the redzone of the temp in like 5 mins. but im not 100% sure the engine is toast. I was thinking about just buying a new head and just putting that on. but im not sure of what to do to be honest.

i think your head is starved of oil. i think it'd be easier to buy another replacement engine and swap it in if you don't mind not being able to drive your car for a while. you can rebuild the old engine and sell it or do a build on it. honestly though, if the headgasket went, you're looking at another engine usually. what do you mean there was a crack in between the valves?
