Default engine oil filter and oils

i've had lotsa noob questions so far so i figure 1 more wouldnt hurt. i was wondering if someone could tell me what size filter i needed for my '01 a4 1.8t quattro, i looked online but all i could find out was that audi started recommending a larger filter at some point cause of the oil sludge problem but couldnt find what size i needed anywhere or what brand would be most recommended. i also needed some suggestions on engine oil brands and weights it gets up to 90 where i live but we also have all 4 seasons and lots of snow. this is my first time actually deciding to change the oil myself so i'm kind of clueless about all this.

all in all i'd like to avoid getting the oil sludge problem completely even if that means changing the oil more often than every 5k miles

Changing your oil every 5k miles is perfect. For the viscosity I always run 5w-40 that will give your a good, all season weight. Always use the large filter. As for the brands, for oil I recommend any audi approved oil such as mobil 1, elf, total, etc. I always use the mayle filter. If you dont want any headaches, and want a good price I recommend you go here

This kit includes the good large filter, new drain plug and washer, as well as some of the best oil for our application. You cant go wrong here!

what size of filter is a "large" filter for our car exactly lol. like when i go to auto stores i know they usually have a computer thing that lets you enter your car model and out comes a filter number but are those the large types that i should be using?

go to autozone and find the mobil1 M301 filter, then find any purolator or duralast or fram or other crap-brand filter that supposedly works for your car and compare sizes. the M301 will be atleast twice as big. thats what 'large' filter means.

that kit from purems is good. remember to buy nothing but fully synthetic oil.

Go to the dealership and buy the one for your car. Tell the parts guy and they will know what to give you. It is very large compared to the normal oil filter you'd see in most cars. It was $9 from the dealership. Or like others said, you can get a Mobil 1.
