Default Engine Problem, running rough

I'm having a problem with my 2001 A4. its a 1.8T with about 105000 miles on it. Totally stock as far as the engine is concerned. Yesterday I went to start it up and the engine sounded like it was about to stall out. It was shaking the car, and the RPMs were bouncing around 1200-1500. about 20 seconds later the check engine light came on. Needless to say I turned the car off. If i rev the engine it seems to be fine, but with the clutch in it idles roughly and sounds like it will stall. I'm having it towed to a shop later today and I wanted to get any thoughts from the community on what might be wrong. Thanks in advance everyone.

Well once the CEL is read we will have more to go off of. Your high bouncy idle could be caused from a bad or dirty ICV (idle control valve) or a number of other issues. Best to find out what the code is first and we can go from there. Our cars love to run rough and throw cylinder misfire codes.

Thanks for the reply, I'm having the car towed to the shop this afternoon, so hopefully i can't get you a code later. But if it is what you suggest, how costly a fix is that? And is that something that can be fixed relatively easily or not?

Well I'm afraid any visit to a shop will set you back. If it's an Audi dealer ouch . Really it's hard to say since they will have to hook it up and find out exactly. Just hooking it up will run you like $80 bucks if its at a dealer and a new ICV if that is the cause is like $250 or more I think. I love to just pay to find out and get a nice used part off of ebay or a junk yard nation wide to help me save money. Let us know .
