Default Engine spec ?

I bought a 98 1.8t that had a replacement motor put in. I was wondering how I could tell if its the 150hp motor or the 170hp.

If the car had a motor swap it should have came with papers stating mileage at swap and what year the swap was out of. If not, you just bought a motor that could have 200k+ miles! 2001 was the change. Easy way like stated is look at engine code.

There should be a stamp on the block that says if its AEB, ATW or AWM. Like Martin said, the AEB is the 150, the other two are your 170 options.

ATW is 150HP. Only the AWM has the 170HP due to the K03S.

The difference is in the amount of boost. Those engines will make basically the same power if you don't swap ECUs.

Ah. Thanks for clearing that up. I'm a 2.8 guy, a lot of details regarding the 1.8t I'm more or less a complete nub at. I was basing my info off the "engine code identification" sticky and thus assumed that it was the block that had the stamp and that it was either of the non AEB codes that had the extra ponies.
