Default Enigne temp. problems

Hey,
So today I was driving and all of a sudden the engine temp. light started flashing and beeping, then i noticed the gauge was all the way on hot. so i pulled over and popped the hood expecting to see i was out of coolant. well it was full and there was no leak or anti-freeze smell at all. i called my mechanic and asked if he thought it was the water pump, he said odds are if it was, i would see some leak and smell anti freeze. he is thinking its the temp. valve.

what are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance

It could be a bad thermostat or a bad water pump because the original ones have a plastic fin and it breaks internally (so no smell or leak)

If it's the sensor what are we talking money wise? And is that something that is fairly easy to do yourself? And Same question for the water pump... Thanks for the fast reply!

Easy to do and they're like... $10? $20? You might end up having to do the coolant flange as well since it's probably rather brittle by now. Still a cheap repair but you'll need to drain at least some of your coolant to do that. You can probably do the sensor without draining anything if you're quick about it. A little might spill out.

if it was a bad sensor / water pump, would this have triggered the CEL? becasue there is no check engine light.
