Ok I'll give it a shot then. I haven't changed any settings with a VAG-COM.

Don't need to change any settings, i would double check to see if there is any carbon build up on the throttle body valve thats restricting the closing of the valve. Looking on the VAG COM the throttle valve angle shouldn't be more than 3% at idle. That value should be between data blocks 2-6.

I would just erase the fault code and see if it comes back.
I thought adaptations realign the TPS in both dbc and dbw, and also throttle plate in dbw.

Same difference, TPS sensor, module, whatever. I guess you can do an adaption to show the sensor the correct percentage values, but if there is carbon build up on the valve the adaption will be wrong regardless.

So if the throttle is more then 3% at idle, there is a good chance of carbon build up on the sensor. if we clean that it should get us back to running good, could the sensor also just be going out?

Carbon doesn't build up on the sensor, it builds up on the throttle valve. The carbon is holding the valve open more than it should be at idle. Then sensor just records how open the the valve is. 1% being all the way closed, 5% WOT (wide open throttle)
