This is how my car was when i bought it and its happened again since then. I had 4 quarters, 2 nickels, 3 pennies, a hair tie, 2 paperclips and a piece of paper with a phone number on it when i bought the car, you can imagine how fun that was to get out . But anywayssss if you do eventually get it unstuck (pried mine open with a butterknife) shine a light down under there you can see what all is stuck. I took a paperclip and made an L out of it and while you hold the ash tray in about 3/4 of the way you can fish everything out.

 

you could pull the trim piece around the shifter off. it kind of goes under the ashtray so if the coin is wedged between that and the ashtray, it may come out.
