Post Foglight Mod help...

Hey guys

Have had my 01 2.8 now for 3 months. Lets just say that I will never drive anything other than an Audi, so I plan to stick around here for a while. I need foglight help. I have looked all over the internet and checked a few sites, audidiy.com, etc, but still am confused. I look throught the threads here and can see how most B5 owners have their fogs modded so that they can turn them on w/ their parks only. How do I do this mod??

I am only 17 but am good at diy stuff, i actually just put in new brake pads on her last weekend, so I think I can handle any sort of serious modding.

I want my fogs on with my orange corners only and I want it so that i can turn them on with the actually fog light button above the dash, not some cheap-*** aftermarket switch.

Anyone have a link or step-by-step instructions on how to do this mod?? Difficulty?? Video Guides Maybe??

Also, I have the halogen projectors, wish I had the OEM xenons, but I bought some 5.2K halogen replacement bulbs on ebay, they are great, but i am hoping to get that bluish look for my lows and fogs and they are still not blue enough, so I was thinking of maybe converting to HID xenons in the near future but have no idea how to do it. Any good links/video guides for this?? Difficulty?? Also, what kits are good to buy, I am interested in the OEM look (around 7500-8000K color), but dont know much about xenons. Also, if its hard to diy, where could i go to get this done?? Can my factory halogens be used to house xenons? I am clueless here but first I would like to get my fog mod done so please help if you can

And always

"Quattro fo life"

Thanks guys

the easiest way is to cut and jumper the relay. the other way is to physically wire them to another switch. you can also cut one of the wire on the switch and wire it to the yellow power post under the kneebolster but i've tried that and it doesn't work. i don't feel like messing with my relay because i don't want to have to buy a new one. both DIYs are available on audiworld.com

good luck with it and let us know what you come up with. also do a search for this mod with my user name. i found out what some of the wires did. the haynes manual doesn't have the right wiring schematics for 01

Yeah, depending on which year your car was made, the wire cut-and-repower that Hiwords mentioned can be done. If not, relay is the way to go. As for HIDs, the OEM color is 4300k, not nearly 8000k. Stick with 4300-6000k for the best visibility (4300k is the best for it, but I can tell you from experience that anything in that range will work great). I have 6000k on my car now, and although the luminosity (intensity of the light) is lower than 4300k, to my eyes the 6000k is a richer light than the 4300k and I like it better.

Your factory projectors can be used for HIDs no problem. Stick with the range I mentioned though - they'll have a decent blue look to them (at least the 6000k will) but will still work great. Get the 8000k kit and you'll have too much blue - likely your beam pattern on the road will be bluish, which is the worst color for visibility. Don't worry about people not realizing you have HIDs - they'll know it for sure - but buy appropriately when it comes to color temperature and buy them for the main purpose - better light, not "the blue look".

yea, all my freinds think the higher the number the brighter they are, i tried explaining it to them once that its not. they dont listen, and i think in vvme i saw a 3300k set that would be pretty damn bright

and this is how i did my fogs, and if your going to follow this way, use the picture in the 2nd reply, that was the best and easiest way, the other way was giving me trouble

the K stands for kelvin which is a measure of temperature, not to be confused with luminosity. the temperature vs luminosity curve is like a parabolic shape which explains the lower luminosity for the 3000K higher for the 4300k and then it goes down again. JC you need to edumecate your friends hehe.

thanks guys,

ya for some reason I thought that OEM was over 7k but i dont know much about those oem xenons. I also didnt know that 4300k was blue, i thought it was yellow, but ill look around. thanks for those threads for the mod too. its weird that i have around 5k halogen bulbs that are more white and that 4300k xenons are blue. I guess xenons are a different story than just halogen bulbs. I was wondering too for the xenon conversion, do I have to worry about burning wires or anything like that, i hear that xenons do get warmer than halogens, but again, clueless here.

Thanks

thanks for the kit website, ill probably get those soon. However, are vvme HIDs the best for b5's, or have you had experience with them? Any other competitive brands? A list of websites would be good too if there are other types, otherwise ill probably get the vvme's. Also, which one do i get, the H7 kit or the D2S kit? Ive heard that audi xenons are D2S, but I have H7 halogens, so which do i get? I mostly just drive on the road, so would 6K be good for me?? Thanks again and maybe ill start takin steps to get these xenons soon. Also, the vvme kit is priced at $40, is that reasonable? expensive? cheap? Also, how do i assembly these into my car? I would like to get goin on gettin these but again I am clueless.

Thanks again guys for all your input and help

And Always
