Default Fuel Problems

My Audi A4 1.8t B5 had died on the road, and then i doesn't start but it cranks. Timing belt is good . the car does start with starting fluid for a couple seconds. I then just replaced the fuel pump and Filter.... the car still doesn't start. any1 else has anything in mind?

Do you have or have access to a VAG-COM device/cable to check for codes stored in the ECU?

Also have you tried priming the engine multiple times prior to starting? (priming involves turning the key to the ON position from the OFF position)

No i do not have access to the VAG-COM device/cable. and yes i have primed the pump but I'm not sure if my sending unit is acting up so im going to add fuel bcus its on the E.

Where do you live? Fill out the location part of your profile. Someone here with vagcom may be nearby and willing to scan the ECU.

The relay should click once as it latches and that's it. If it's fluttering it explains why the thing won't work. Check voltage at the input leg of the relay - if it's a solid 12v I'd say the relay is bad. If it's low voltage you may have an ignition switch going out and not putting sufficient voltage to the relay to latch it.

The power supply voltage low refers to output terminal 30 on the ignition switch. That's the trigger voltage output terminal for many of the car's relays. When you turn the key on, the pump runs for about 2 seconds. Have someone turn the key on and see what voltage you see at the positive wire on the fuel pump power harness (there are two harness connectors at the pump - the larger one is the pump and the smaller is the gauge sending unit). You should see a solid 12v. If you don't, and I don't think you will based on what you've said, then it's possible your ignition switch is faulty. If it is, it may not be putting out the required level of voltage to latch the relay (which would explain the chattering relay). Did you check the voltage at the input and output legs of the relay yet? The relay is number 372 on the panel in the dash under the steering column. You can test the relay itself by pulling it out, putting a wire to ground on the ground leg, a wire on the power input terminal touching the battery positive terminal, and touching a second wire from the battery to the switched input terminal. When you touch that wire, you should hear it click. If it does, your relay is good and I'd say it points to the ignition switch. If it chatters or otherwise doesn't latch solidly with a single click, replace the relay and see what happens.

If you have another B5 locally you could borrow their relay, plug it in, and see if the car starts.
