Default Fuel Sensor, Gauge?????

So I have a weird issue. I filled up the car. Then when driving around town all seems okay. When I get on the freeway and cruise at 65+ mph the fuel gauge starts to go down say from near full to in between 5/8 and 3/4 or just under. Today it went lower and then dropped to empty. The low fuel light cam on and then 5 minutes later or so it went back up to the 5/8 mark. Then when I got off the freeway and started to drive around town it went back up to just about 3/4. Then after the car is shut off and a little later I checked and it is at 7/8 (which is likely correct for how far I drove after filling). This whole thing started about 1-1/2 months ago ans seems to be getting worse as today was the first time it dropped to empty.

Any ideas?. Is it the sensor - where is it in this car. 1997 B5 AFC engine 12v V6.

Also if the gauge drops to empty and the low fuel light comes on and it stays there even though the tank is full will this trip anything computer wise in the car to cause the car not to get fuel. I do not think this is the case but wanted to at least ask?

Sensor is in the tank behind the passenger side seat in the trunk. The car will still run normally regardless of what the gauge says as long as there is fuel in the tank.
