Fuel and temp guage fault
Hi all, I'm new here and a new Audi owner.
I have just bought a 2001 A4 Avant 1.9tdi (130).
I collected the car today, and have noticed the temp guage starts reading up by H (even with the ignition off) and moves off the scale as the engine warms up. Also the fuel guage is off the top of the guage but the fuel light has come on. All other guages and functions work fine.
The battery was swapped before I collected it, so is it a fault caused by the battery being removed and how do I fix it? Or is it coinsidence and the temp sender and fuel sender have both packed up?
Thanks in advance
Paul

I can't imagine a battery swap effecting only the temp and fuel gauges and not the rest of the instrument cluster, but i also find it hard to believe that they would crap out at the same time if not due to the same cause..... I realize thats not an extremely helpful post, just thinkin out loud lol.
Hopefully some of the more experienced guys can shed some light for ya. GL!

not sure about TDIs but the temp sensors on alot of these cars are faulty from the factory. its a $15 replacement, atleast for most people, and pretty easy to do yourself.
as for the gas light, i dont know what to tell you. even with a working gas gauge, i get in the habbit of resetting the trip odometer every time i fill up. that way i know almost exactly how much gas i have left at all times even if the gas gauge/light malfunctions.

I have the same problem with the fuel gauge reading 0 and the fuel light is on. Did you ever figure out the cause?

No I never found the problem, I just live with it now. The temp guage occasionally works but the fuel does nothing. I just use the digital display to see how much further I can drive before I run out
I actually found the problem. The fuel sending unit had a broken wire from the "wiper" on the potentiometer thats connected to the float. I soldered a new wire on and its working like new. If you find the same problem i would recommend lengthening the wire enough so you can loop it around, it looked like they made it barely long enough to reach the bottom and after years of moving up and down the wire broke.
