Default Full Transmission Flush

My transmission in my automatic 97 1.8t Quattro A4 is slipping when it changes gears from 1st to 2nd and all around it's shifting sort of hard thru all the gears. I want to do a full transmission flush, drop the pan and change the filter while I'm at it. My concern is I can't seem to find how many quarts of fluid is supposed to go in there. Some people say 4-5 quarts while others say up to 9 quarts. Anyone have done this before and know how many quarts is actually needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks everyone...

I havnt actaully done it, but I've read a little about it in anticipation.

Usually, you dont actually flush the system. You drain the fluid, and only about half or so will drain out. The transmission holds about 9 quarts so 4-5 quarts will be drained.

You can buy a kit from blauparts that includes a filter for like $115

yea there is a big expensive machine that mechanics have to change out all of the trans fluid at once. it involves hooking the machine into the transmission lines and letting the car pump the dirty fluid in one side and suck clean fluid out the other. that is really the only way to get 99% of the fluid and i would recommend having it done. you shouldnt need to do it more then once every 75k-100k miles or so.

dealer wants about $500 to do it, when I can do it myself and save some money, so should I order 9 quarts of tranny fluid?

To save some money, you can buy a kit and some extra fluid. Drain it once, refill and run through the gears, then drain and refill again.
