You do realize most vette owners don't have them to drive in the snow right? That would be like me owning my triumph as a year round michigan driver. It just doesn't work.

You want our opinion, we're gonna tell ya. Auto trans are POS. If you want a good DD, nice gas mileage, and something that's still fun to drive, 1.8T 5spd. Mods are available for anything you want. If you want a little bit more power, yet conserving that MPG while tearing up the corners, chip/zaust/springs etc. The possibilities are endless. For the amount your going to drop on that auto with 66k, prepare to drop about another 3-6k on a new trans, plus whatever else needs to be done while they're in there and labor. Good luck mate.

Like has been mentioned, I didn't buy the vette to drive in the snow. And its a given that the american cars are going to be faster. A 1.8l turbo doesn't stand a chance against a 5.7-7.0L. As far as the TCU, it doesn't hurt the transmission the way it is. It is just a pain to have to shift it down into 2nd gear everytime you come to a stop. I'm not planning on making this thing fast or have more power. I just want a decent daily driver that will be able to get around in the winter.

haha, umm... theres a lot of BT 1.8T's that can beat Vettes, but stock, yes u are right.

i would still get a 1.8T because they get better gas mileage then the 2.8, so if your using it for a daily driver i would still go that route.

I have a 99 vette (auto) and 01 A4 1.8T (chipped, 5-speed) and can tell you that in dry conditions the Vette will mop the floor with the Audi every time. Throw in water or snow it's different ballgame, of course. But here's the thing: in real world, day-to-day driving they're both as quick as any driver would ever need. Both can hustle up to speed on an on-ramp, both can hug a corner, and both can do a 800-mile/day trip without beating you up. Saying one car is better than the other is like saying chocolate tastes better than cotton feels... it's totally apples to oranges.

The thing I really like about both cars is there's lots of great mod potential for each of them, and both cars have good communities of people behind them -- much more helpful, mature and respectful than the typical import crowd.

If you absolutely have your heart set on an autotragic transmission, don't get a '96 or '97, because they have an earlier, extra-crappy version. Get a '98 or newer with a Tiptronic automatic transmission so you can at least sometimes pretend that you have control over the drivetrain by suggesting to the computer approximately when you would like to shift using the buttons on the steering wheel.

And really, don't ever go into a forum based around non-American cars and make claims of any kind about how American cars are better/faster/have bigger penises - you'll just get laughed at. That's just a good policy, no matter your opinion.

well all the cars I have owned in the past have been manuals and driving it driving sucks with one which is why I was wanting an auto.

Does anyone know how much it would cost for someone like modulemaster to rebuild the tcu? Also how hard is it to get to and change myself?
