Guess the cause of this sound...
was the noise audible only when breaking?

I had that noise while braking turned out to be outerball joints and a couple balljoints, Months later it made that thumping noise while driving and braking replaced the inner tierods and that did the trick, Pull your wheel off and grab a hold of your tierod pull it back and forth see if it makes a pop noise.
