have no idea where this motor came from
hi i own a 99 a4 1.8t and there was a replacement motor put in and i cant figure out where it came from. does any body have suggestions on how to find out. its a factory replacement motor. i have called every where the car has been and nobody knows nothing including corporate.
the stealership told me that there was no way they could find out. but they did tell me it was a factory replacement motor do to the sticker on the top of the motor and thetiming belt was the new style.( what ever that means)i did do a car fax but there is nothing. maybe it was a diy. i was able to find out were the car originally came from and i called them but they had no info. i would like to know where the motor came from or when and who put it in so when the dealer tells me that i need a tb and i dont like they did along with other things i can tell them to bend someone else over.and i would just like to know for myself
the engine has a unique number stamped on it top of the engine block ( nothing to do with the VIN ) and believe me it can be traced back to the production line so when they say its not traceable its bull, if your car was involved in a serious accident how do you think the police trace the cars home and owner ( VIN/ENGINE number or tag as its called )
edit: engine number is stamped on the block driver side USA rear end under the inlet next to last spark plug near the firewall ( if its been ground off then consider it a stolen engine ) and the police can still get the number out of it via radiation techniques because its stamped in so it alters the structure of the metal and its stamped in many other parts which only the makers know
so if you have it send the number to the manufacturers they will tell you when it was made and which car it went into

techbod,
the spot that you are talking about is that right above cylinder 4 on the head. if so ther is a sticker there and it is writen ingerman with a bar code. the tech at the stealership told methat therewas supposed to be a stampon a tab to the right of cylinder one. which is as smooth as can be the tech alsotold me that the sticker was from the factory.
i will look for the stamp on the block and how would i go about contacting the manufacturers. thanks for your info

The engine vin # is stamped on the block right next to cylinder 3 and just above the spot where the oil/coolant cooler is mounted on the driverside. The number on the head is just for the head not the block itself.
