Default help diagnose rear end noise ?

Hi - have a 98.5 a4 with 5sp and v6. There is a dull humming, droning sort of noise coming from the rear end at highway speeds. That sound has been present for a while. Recently however, I now seem to get a click click click coming from the rear when I go around turns to the RIGHT.

I'm guessing rear wheel bearing? Which side given click on right turns?

Thanks.

probably a wheel bearing in the back, doesn't really matter which side. Common wisdom is to replace them all at the same time (not entirely necessary but...).

Clicking while turning is usuall and indication of a bad CV joint. Usually accompanied by a torn CV boot, leaking grease. Best way to find it is to inspect the CV boots for tears and leaking grease.

This just started happening on my car too. I didn't see a DIY for replacing the rear bearings, is that because it's so simple? Or does it take a 20-ton press to install the new ones, so you pretty much have to take it to the dealership?

the bearings aren't that difficult. They DO have to be pressed. Best bet is to remove the old and take them to a shop to have them press the new ones for you.

I think if you search around more you will find a DIY write up. Probably on here, but might be others too via google searching. From memory I recall at least one write up that some posters said that their NAPA would press bearings on free if you bought the parts there. My local NAPA apparently does not offer this service. i think other posters mentioned that there local service shops would press in bearings for a fairly reasonable price. Once guy mentioned actually buying a press.
